‘America’s Best Dance Crew’ Recap: “Justin Bieber Challenge”!!

Instant Noodles, America's Best Dance Crew
JUSTIN BIEBER NIGHT IS FINALLY HERE! It’s hard to say how I feel about tonight. I’m not sure that the Bieber catalog is strong enough to make for a mesmerizing night of dance, but as Bieber is one of the most popular artists in the world right now, this is clearly a ratings ploy. Fine by me- let’s just get to the performances!
ICONic Boyz, “Baby”
Okay, for real? I really expected these boys to kill Bieber week. It’s right up their alley, But I’m not gonna front. They were absolutely wack. They overused their theme to the point where it killed their performance. JC was right, it was totally easy, and that lack of difficulty made them look the weakest they ever have. I completely disagree with Lil’ Mama and D-Trix- their use of theatrics doesn’t excuse their lackluster choreography. They’ve certainly performed better.
Grade: 3/10
IaMmE, “Somebody To Love”
If IaMmE did not prove with this performance that they are the best crew in the competition, then the entire system is out of work. Their mechanics are insane, and the best part about their gimmick (if you want to call it that) of crazy machines is that it has yet to get old. They got probably the best song out of the bunch to perform, and they nailed it. Clean, entertaining, theatric, energetic. I don’t see anyone topping that at all tonight.
Grade: 9/10
Phunk Phenomenon, “Eenie Meenie”
I loved their outfits, I’ll say that. I think they had a good energy to the performance, and they used quite a few neat tricks, but I don’t feel like their choreography was tough enough. I did like the stepping, even though it didn’t quite fit the music as a whole. As a whole, however, it didn’t blow me away. Still, I think they did enough to earn another week.
Grade: 7/10
Now for the bottom two! Street Kingdom find themselves in the bottom once again, along with Instant Noodles, and I feel like for the first time all season, the two crews who have to battle it out make sense. I’ve clearly had my opinion on Street Kingdom, and I don’t feel like Instant Noodles ever really showed up to compete. My instant thought, believe it or not, is to actually save the crew I’ve probably been the most vocal against: Street Kingdom. Despite how I feel about them, I still think they’ve got more potential. But let’s get to the battle…
Instant Noodles, “Runaway Love”
Here’s my thing about Instant Noodles. I completely respect what they do, and the discipline it takes, and how difficult their tricks are. I certainly don’t think they lack talent. That being said, I just don’t think they have the charisma or special quality that really can take them to the next level. What they do, so many other crews have done before, and that hurts them when it comes to longtime fans of the show. JC was right, they owned their prop. I just don’t think they’ve earned another week.
Grade: 7/10
Street Kingdom, “Never Say Never”
I think Street Kingdom kicked ass this week. I’ve hated on them before, because I find that they rarely dance in unison and it makes them look unrehearsed, unprepared, and untalented. This week, however, they were a UNIT. It actually looked like they went into a room, figured out a routine, and performed it as a cohesive team, and not just a krumper with nine people all around him. Lil’ Mama was right, they’ve really grown as a group. I understand that krumping isn’t supposed to be unified, but they really found a great way to dance together, and not lose their sense of self as a stylized group.
Grade: 8/10
And elimination time is upon us once again. It’s funny that as badly as I want Street Kingdom to go home eventually, I genuinely don’t think this is their week. Not when this was their best performance yet. Mario announces that the safe crew is… Street Kingdom.
